RhineThe Rhine is a very busy water way that is used for transportation of raw materials from Rotterdam in The Netherlands, through Germany to Basel in Switzerland. Besides this traffic there is also a lot to see, with romantic castles and vineyards lined up near Koblenz. The water level on the Rhine can vary, depending on melting snow in the Alps, rainy season and drought. Sometimes cruises are not possible according to the original itinerary.

When is the best time to travel?
Most people travel in the high season, when the schools are closed and the temperatures are the highest. This may make sense for beach vacations with children. But remember that these periods (July and August in Europe + N-America, China & Japan) are by far the busiest. There will be crowds everywhere.
The hottest season has become even hotter and dryer in the past few years due to climate change, sometimes resulting in forest fires. Sometimes temperatures have become unbearable. In extreme cases attractions may close during the hottest times of the day.
Due to seasonal droughts and low water levels, some river cruises may not be able to go everywhere as planned. This may lead to cancellations and itinerary changes for example on the Rhine and Danube.
For the above reasons we highly recommend travelling in the shoulder season, just before or after the peak season. Fewer people travel, temperatures are still nice, accommodations are cheaper and there are no problems with heat or drought. This is the best time to travel!
