Saudi Arabia is known for its desert, oil reserves and centre of Islam. It is a relatively new tourist destination, with exception of religious pilgrimages to Mecca and Medina. Other destinations include Al Ula.
In 2008, UNESCO proclaimed Hegra as a site of patrimony, becoming Saudi Arabia's first World Heritage Site. It was chosen for its well-preserved remains from late antiquity, especially the monumental rock-cut tombs.
