De Andes is de op één na hoogste bergketen (na de Himalaya in Azië) en strekt zich uit van het Caribisch gebied, via Columbia, Ecuador, Peru en Chili tot het koude Tierra del Fuego in Argentinië, een afstand van 7000 km. Onderweg vind je Inca-ruïnes, tropische valleien, vulkanen, woestijnen, hoge bergen (Aconcagua ~ 6961m hoogte), gletsjers en fjorden.
