Aan de andere kant is het de afgelopen bijna 2000 jaar het centrum geweest van joodse, islamitische en christelijke religies, met feesten en gevechten. Jezus Christus leefde en stierf in steden als Bethlehem, Nazareth en Jeruzalem. Jeruzalem als hoofdstad is zeer omstreden tussen Israël en Palestina.
