Er is niet veel wild op het Noord- of Zuidereiland van Nieuw-Zeeland en dit vooral omdat het een nieuw en afgelegen land is, verrezen uit de zee. Je vindt er veel ruimte, de natuur in alle soorten, veel schapen en de lokale Kea-vogel (een kleine papegaai). In het uiterste zuiden vind je zelfs enkele pinguïnsoorten en de machtige Albatros. Als je hier komt, hou je er van om weg te zijn uit de drukte en vind je het niet erg als het een beetje koel is, het een beetje waait of wat regent. De lokale bevolking noemt zichzelf Kiwi's, zoals de vogel en het fruit.
ChristchurchChristchurch is de grootste stad op het Zuidereiland. De stad werd zwaar getroffen door twee aardbevingen in 2010 en 2011 (magnitude 7.1 en 6.3) waarbij 185 mensen om het leven kwamen. De schade is nog steeds goed zichtbaar in het stadscentrum, waar echte ruïnes en verlaten gebouwen nu gloednieuwe kantoren en restaurants zijn.
