Er is niet veel wild op het Noord- of Zuidereiland van Nieuw-Zeeland en dit vooral omdat het een nieuw en afgelegen land is, verrezen uit de zee. Je vindt er veel ruimte, de natuur in alle soorten, veel schapen en de lokale Kea-vogel (een kleine papegaai). In het uiterste zuiden vind je zelfs enkele pinguïnsoorten en de machtige Albatros. Als je hier komt, hou je er van om weg te zijn uit de drukte en vind je het niet erg als het een beetje koel is, het een beetje waait of wat regent. De lokale bevolking noemt zichzelf Kiwi's, zoals de vogel en het fruit.
Franz Josef GlacierDe Franz Josefgletsjer is een 12 km lange gletsjer gelegen aan de westkust van het Zuidereiland van Nieuw-Zeeland. Net als de nabijgelegen Foxgletsjer is de Franz Josefgletsjer een van de meest toegankelijke gletsjers ter wereld.
