Er is niet veel wild op het Noord- of Zuidereiland van Nieuw-Zeeland en dit vooral omdat het een nieuw en afgelegen land is, verrezen uit de zee. Als je hier komt, hou je er van om weg te zijn uit de drukte en vind je het niet erg als het een beetje koel is, het een beetje waait of wat regent. De lokale bevolking noemt zichzelf Kiwi's, zoals de vogel en het fruit.
