India and China are the most populous countries on the planet. India is called "a continent by itself" even though it is part of Asia. It is very colorful with lots of traditions, festivities, sports (very British), dance, film and music (Bollywood!). Indian kitchen & cooking with curries, chapatis, vegies, chilis, etc is world-famous and delicious. Financial wealth is not spread evenly: a small percentage of the people is extremely rich, a middle class with good education is comparable to western standards and the majority is still very, very poor.

About China
China and India are the most populous countries on the planet. Formerly communistic, China turned very capitalistic. This large country and great culture offers many superb touristy sites with the Great Wall (the only structure visible from the moon) and the Terra Cotta Warriors being the most famous. Beijing, Shanghai, Guilin and Xian in particular are worth a visit. China has excellent, very fast trains and travel has become really easy.

Kolkata (Calcutta) is one of the three gigantic cities in India. It is probably the poorest, where riksjas can still be on foot. Mother Theresa lived three for many years to care for a needy population.

Agra is world-famous for one of the most beautiful buildings in the world: the Taj Mahal. The completely symmetrical Mausoleum is made of white marble with lots and lots of precious stones built in. If in Agra, don´t forget to visit the red fort as well... Or dine on a roof...

Amritsar is the capital of Punjab and center of the Sikh religion. The city offers several typical Indian buildings, but the Golden Temple is definitely the main attraction. Women may want to go shopping for Punjabi dresses. From here you can also take a funny tour to the Pakistani border...

Bodhgaya is the place where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment while sitting under the Bodhi tree. Herewith he turned into Lord Buddha ("the awakened one" or ‘the enlightened one’), the teacher with 250 million followers.

Darjeeling is one of the most remote places in the Indian sub-continent, where it is located between Nepal and Bhutan. The area is known for mountains and tea.

New Delhi is the capital of India and one of the largest cities in the world. The old city is quite picturesque - as is most of India. Unfortunately Delhi is also the most polluted city in the world and not a safe place for women alone at night...
