There isn't a lot of wildlife on either North- or South Island of New Zealand and this mainly because it is a new and remote country, risen from the sea. You will find a lot of space, nature in all varieties, plenty of sheep and the local Kea bird (a small parrot). In the far south you may even find a few penguin species and the mighty Albatross. When you come here, you like to be away from it all and you don't mind a little chill, a bit of wind or some rain. Locals call themselves Kiwis, like the bird and the fruit.

Christchurch is the largest city on South Island. The city was hit hard by two earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 (magnitude 7.1 and 6.3) that killed 185 people. Wellington is the capital of New Zealand, but not the largest city. Located at the far bottom of Nort Island, most people will pass here when crossing between both islands. Queenstown is the activity capital of New Zealand within a beautiful country side with mountains, lakes and fjords. It is also the activity centre of New Zealand with fishing, speed boating, skiing and other stuff.

Rotorua is best known for the underground geothermic activity, like hot springs, geysirs and mud pools. Even the soil on the camp ground may be "warm"... The tourism industry is by far the largest industry in the district.

Taupō is located on the northeastern shore of Lake Taupō, New Zealand's largest lake. This is a beautiful lake with picturesque surrounding, but also the caldera of the Taupō Volcano.
