There isn't a lot of wildlife on either North- or South Island of New Zealand and this mainly because it is a new and remote country, risen from the sea. You will find a lot of space, nature in all varieties, plenty of sheep and the local Kea bird (a small parrot). In the far south you may even find a few penguin species and the mighty Albatross. When you come here, you like to be away from it all and you don't mind a little chill, a bit of wind or some rain. Locals call themselves Kiwis, like the bird and the fruit.

They let you cover more distance than on foot, while still giving you time to look around, talk and see things the easy way. On Bicycle tours the tour operator usually provides and maintains the bicycle, plus takes care of your luggage in between accommodations. Distances of around 50km per day are normal, with days off.
